The Reserve Bank of India has fixed the premature-redemption price for Sovereign Gold Bond 2019–20 Series VI at ₹14,213 per unit. The price applies to eligible redemption due on 30 October 2026, according to an RBI release dated 29 October.
The tranche was issued on 30 October 2019. Under the scheme terms, premature redemption may be permitted after the fifth year from issuance on an interest-payment date. The 30 October date is the next eligible redemption date identified by the central bank for this series.
Price uses a three-business-day average
The redemption value is based on the simple average closing price of 999-purity gold published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association. RBI used the closing prices for 27, 28 and 29 October 2026 to calculate the ₹14,213-per-unit amount.
The method links the payout to the prescribed domestic gold-price benchmark rather than the traded price of an individual bond on an exchange. The announced amount is the redemption price for the eligible tranche and date; it is not a forecast of future gold prices.
Eligibility follows the scheme notification
The governing Government of India notification for the tranche is dated 30 September 2019. The bond's issue date was one month later, on 30 October 2019. The premature-redemption window arises from the scheme condition allowing exit after the fifth year on an interest-payment date.
Investors' final cash flows may also include the scheme's separate interest payment according to the bond terms. The RBI release covered the redemption price and did not provide individual tax treatment, holding records or payment-processing timelines for each investor.
Benchmark and documentation should align
Banks and other receiving offices handling the redemption must match investor eligibility, units held and account details with scheme records. Finance teams holding the bonds should distinguish the announced redemption value from accounting carrying value and from any secondary-market quotation before redemption.
The calculation uses three specified business days, so a single day's gold move does not determine the payout. Any comparison with the original subscription amount should use the actual issue terms and investor records rather than the current announcement alone.
