The rupee closed at 95.12 per US dollar on Tuesday 27 October 2026, up 3 paise from Monday's close of 95.15, according to a PTI report carried by HDFC Sky. It opened at 95.17 and traded between 95.09 and 95.24. Reuters, via Business Recorder, puts the close at 95.115, roughly flat from 95.185 a day earlier. Spectate Media has not seen exchange data and relies on those reports.
Why it held
PTI attributes the small gain to likely Reserve Bank of India intervention, but says the rupee could not keep it against steady selling by foreign investors. Reuters says the currency depends on that support, and reports the RBI has spent about $80 billion since June, a figure it attributes to reports rather than RBI data. Foreign investors have net sold about $8.5 billion of Indian equities over two months, Reuters says, and sold ₹1,462.49 crore on Monday, per exchange data cited by PTI.
Oil and the dollar
Brent futures were around $115.73 a barrel, near a six-month high, with PTI linking the level to attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure. Reuters has crude near $117 in Asian hours, so the readings differ. India imports about 90% of its oil. The dollar index was up 0.06% at 101.86 ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision, and Reuters notes the US 10-year yield is near 5%.
What analysts say
Anuj Choudhary of Mirae Asset Sharekhan expects a negative bias and a USD-INR range of 94.85 to 95.50, with hopes of US-Iran de-escalation a possible support. Former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan told Reuters India should not "fixate on a number" or drain reserves to defend the rupee.
What to watch
