The Sensex ended flat on Tuesday 27 October 2026 at 73,598.87, down 8.08 points or 0.01%, and the Nifty 50 settled at 22,749.75, down 3.45 points, according to IANS and Business Standard's market close report. Spectate Media has not seen exchange data and relies on those reports. One broker blog gives different closing levels (Sensex 73,497.28, Nifty 22,738.55), which may reflect an earlier time, so the IANS and Business Standard figures are used here.

Broader market led

The Nifty Midcap 100 rose about 1% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 about 2.7%, the strongest segment of the day. Media, realty and pharma were the leading sectors. Business Standard says the Nifty Media index gained over 3.6%, while IANS puts the leaders at 2% to 3%, so the exact sector gains differ. Private banks and financial services were the biggest laggards, with the Nifty Bank index down 0.7%, and IT was down about 1.8% after profit booking, per the Equentis blog. Infosys fell 2.8% after cutting its FY27 revenue growth guidance.

Stocks

Bharti Airtel, Trent, Maruti Suzuki, Power Grid and Eternal were the Sensex's top gainers, and SBI, Axis Bank, TCS, Asian Paints and HDFC Bank its main laggards. Tata Consumer Products rose nearly 5.8% after its second-quarter results. Acutaas Chemicals rose about 13% to a record high on NSE, and Aequs fell about 19% after reporting a wider quarterly loss.

What to watch

Analysts cited by IANS see 22,800 as resistance and 22,600 as support for the Nifty. Direction depends on earnings, crude, the West Asia crisis and the Fed's policy signal. Brent was near $115 a barrel, close to a six-month high, per Equentis, though Business Standard's page gave conflicting readings. The reports describe persistent foreign selling and strong domestic buying but give no figures for the day. Jio Platforms is due to list on Wednesday 28 October at 10 am.

What investors should note

Three points. First, flat benchmarks hid a sharp split, with smallcaps up and banks and IT down. Second, crude near a six-month high and the Fed decision are the open risks. Third, Jio's listing is the next market event. Not investment advice.
