Indian equity indices fell for a fourth straight session on Friday, 23 October 2026, with the broader market hit hardest. The Sensex closed at 73,123.83, down 125.56 points or 0.17%, and the Nifty 50 at 22,600.00, down 87.65 points or 0.39%, according to Business Standard's figures at the 3:38 pm settlement. The Sensex had been down about 431 points at 3 pm and the Nifty about 198 points, so both recovered late in the session.
Broader market
The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 2.21% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 2.94%, according to Business Standard. Upstox reported the smallcap index down about 4% and the midcap index about 3% at their lows around 1:30 pm, and put the week's fall at 6.3% for midcaps and 7.8% for smallcaps. Business Standard says all NSE sectoral indices closed lower, with Nifty Metal the biggest laggard. The volatility index rose about 6%. Among stocks, Hatsun Agro fell 10.14% to ₹964.10 after a weaker second-quarter EBITDA margin, and Swiggy hit a 52-week low after its results, Upstox reported.
Why markets fell
Analysts quoted by Business Standard cite valuation concerns in mid and smallcaps, the unwinding of leveraged positions, higher crude on Middle East tensions and weak global cues amid an AI-led sell-off in global equities. Brent was reported near $114 a barrel. The rupee closed at 94.93 a dollar, down 12 paise, in provisional data from The Federal, and foreign investors sold a net ₹3,458.70 crore of equities on Thursday. Final flows for Friday were not available. LKP Securities' Vatsal Bhuva sees support for the Nifty at 22,500 and 22,200 and resistance at 22,700 to 22,800.

What boards and CFOs should note
Three points stand out. First, the weakness is concentrated in mid and smallcaps, which fell far more than the benchmarks. Second, crude near $114 keeps input costs and the rupee under pressure. Third, an IPO allotment is due, and one analyst expects over ₹3 lakh crore of subscription money to return to the market. This is not investment advice.
