Indian equity benchmarks fell for a second straight session on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, with the sharpest losses in smaller companies. The Sensex fell 143.21 points, or 0.19%, to 73,709.69. The Nifty 50 fell 77.60 points, or 0.34%, to 22,811.35. Both figures are from Business Standard and an IANS report. Markets were shut on Tuesday for Dussehra, so the declines are measured against Monday's close of 73,852.90 for the Sensex and about 22,889 for the Nifty.
The broader market fell harder
The Nifty MidCap 100 lost 1.58% and the Nifty SmallCap 100 lost 2.37%, about seven times the Nifty's fall. A Zeebiz headline put the loss in BSE market capitalisation at ₹6.7 lakh crore. Business Standard reported India's volatility index up 6%, without giving the level.
Sectors and stocks
Every NSE sectoral index closed lower except Nifty IT, the only gainer. IANS names the Nifty Chemical, Consumer Durables and Metal indices as the biggest laggards, and Bajaj Finance, BSE Limited and Eternal among the Nifty's top losers, without giving percentages. In intraday moves reported by Business Standard, Eternal fell 4.5% to ₹305.65 ahead of its second-quarter results and Vishal Mega Mart dropped 6% after its profit margin slipped to 4.6% from 5.1%. SML Mahindra hit the 10% lower circuit after a 44.5% fall in quarterly profit to ₹11.7 crore. Hindustan Zinc rose 4%, and defence stocks fell by up to 6%.
Jio Platforms' first IPO day
The ₹30,213 crore Jio Platforms issue opened for bidding. At 2:40 pm it was subscribed 2.22 times overall, with qualified institutional buyers at 6.72 times, non-institutional investors at 0.86 times and retail investors at 0.57 times. These are intraday figures, and the issue stays open until Friday, 23 October.
What the reports leave out
The two reports give no figures for foreign or domestic institutional flows, crude oil or the rupee, so those are not covered here.
Key numbers
- Sensex: 73,709.69 (Down 143.21 points, 0.19%)
- Nifty 50: 22,811.35 (Down 77.60 points, 0.34%)

What boards and CFOs should note
Three points stand out. First, the fall was much deeper outside the large-cap index, which matters for firms that rely on small and mid-cap equity funding. Second, a mega IPO is drawing demand on the same day the broader market fell. Third, the reports give no flow data to explain the fall.
