The National Payments Corporation of India has formed NPCI Tech Solutions Limited as a wholly owned technology subsidiary, Reuters reported on 4 November. The new unit will serve as NPCI's technology and innovation arm and extend work beyond the group's core payments mandate.

The subsidiary will focus on artificial intelligence, blockchain, digital financial infrastructure and global capability centre services. NPCI chief technology officer Vishal Kanvaty has been appointed managing director and chief executive of the new company.

Mandate goes beyond payment operations

NPCI operates Indian retail payment and settlement systems, including the Unified Payments Interface. NTSL is intended to build technology capabilities beyond that operating role and provide services for digital public infrastructure programmes.

The disclosed areas include eKYC Setu and the Unified Ticketing Platform. The announcement did not provide an investment amount, employee count, commercial targets or a delivery timetable for the unit.

Leadership comes from inside NPCI

Kanvaty has been associated with NPCI for nearly a decade, according to the report. Moving the group's technology chief into the subsidiary gives NTSL leadership with direct experience of the organisation's payments infrastructure.

NPCI chief executive Dilip Asbe linked the move to new possibilities emerging across digital infrastructure and financial services from AI and other technologies. The release did not specify individual AI models, blockchain networks or prospective customers.

Fourth wholly owned subsidiary

NTSL becomes NPCI's fourth wholly owned subsidiary. The existing units are NPCI International Payments, NPCI Bharat BillPay and NPCI BHIM Services.

That structure separates international expansion, bill-payment infrastructure, the BHIM application and now technology services into specialised entities. How projects, intellectual property, security responsibilities and revenues are allocated between NPCI and NTSL was not disclosed.

Key numbers

  • Ownership: wholly owned by NPCI
  • NTSL leadership: one managing director and CEO
  • NPCI association of the appointed CEO: nearly a decade
  • Wholly owned NPCI subsidiaries after the formation: four
  • Named focus areas: four

What boards and CFOs should note

  • Which digital-infrastructure programmes will contract directly with NTSL?
  • What governance and security framework will apply to AI and blockchain work?
  • How will technology assets and costs be divided between NPCI and its fourth subsidiary?
