Indian startups raised $10.9 billion in venture capital equity between January and 15 October 2026, up 6.8% from the same period of 2025, according to Tracxn data reported by Business Standard on 18 October. The total has hardly moved in three years: the report gives $10.2 billion for the same period of 2025 and $10.4 billion for the first ten months of 2024.

Fewer, larger rounds

The money went into 1,253 rounds, against 1,982 a year earlier, so the average round rose to $8.6 million from $5.1 million. The ten startups that raised the most took about 36% of the total, or $3.92 billion. Seven of those with public valuation data had a combined valuation of $10.3 billion in 2026, against $9.3 billion in 2025.

The largest deals

Nxtra Data, Bharti Airtel's data centre business, raised $1 billion in the largest deal, led by Alpha Wave Global. Neysa, an AI infrastructure company based in Mumbai, raised a $600 million Series B led by Blackstone, lifting its valuation from $800 million to $1.4 billion. Sarvam AI raised $255.1 million in January and $90.4 million in August, $345 million in all, and became a unicorn in June at a $1.5 billion valuation. Its investors include Nvidia and HCLTech.

Where the money is going

Deeptech, AI and clean energy are drawing more money, while consumer tech and finance startups are getting less. Anjan Ray of Navam Capital, a deeptech investor, said family offices, financial institutions and wealthy individuals are staying away because the stock market is subdued, and that investors are cautious because exits in deeptech can take up to a decade.

Key numbers

  • VC equity funding, Jan to 15 Oct 2026: $10.9 billion (Up 6.8% from $10.2 billion)
  • Funding rounds: 1,253 (Down from 1,982)
  • Average round: $8.6 million (From $5.1 million)
  • Top ten startups: $3.92 billion (About 36% of the total)

What boards and CFOs should note

Three points stand out. First, headline funding is flat, but fewer startups are getting larger cheques. Second, investment is concentrated in AI, data centres and clean energy. Third, founders in consumer and finance may face a thinner funding market.
