Indian benchmark indices rose for a second session on Friday, 30 October, as technology and pharmaceutical shares outweighed weakness across most other sectors and the broader market.
The Nifty 50 added 116.35 points, or 0.51%, to close at 23,053.10. The BSE Sensex gained 308.49 points, or 0.42%, to 74,459.53. The Bank Nifty moved the other way, falling 222.70 points, or 0.41%, to 54,686.95.
The headline gain concealed a weaker market underneath. The Nifty Smallcap 100 fell about 1.85% and the Nifty Midcap 100 declined roughly 0.9%. IT led sectoral gains with a rise of more than 2%, followed by pharma and healthcare, while auto, FMCG, metals, realty, PSU banks and oil and gas finished lower.
The rupee strengthened to around 94.95 against the US dollar, while Brent crude remained above $116 a barrel. That combination left investors balancing support from a softer dollar against the inflation and current-account risks associated with elevated oil prices.
Boardroom read
The close was positive but narrow. Large-cap technology and healthcare strength pushed the benchmarks higher, while weaker mid- and small-cap participation signalled that risk appetite had not broadened across the market.
