India's vehicle retail sales were 25,36,920 units in September 2026, up 31.82% from a year earlier and 4.69% from August, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported by IANS on 6 October. FADA called it the best month on record. April–September retail was 1,55,12,319 units, up 20.77%, the strongest first half of a financial year.
Segments
Two-wheelers were 17,90,188 units, up 33.08%. Passenger vehicles were 4,27,213, up 32.10%. Commercial vehicles were 1,03,557, up 37.62%, the first September above one lakh units, with heavy trucks up 46% according to a Motor India report. Three-wheelers were 1,32,570, up 22.25%. Tractors were 76,906, up 13.75% on the year but 12.58% lower than August, which Motor India attributes to patchy monsoon rains and a later festive calendar.
A distorted base
FADA President Sai Giridhar called 31.82% "the most base-distorted print of the year". September 2025 was weak because buyers delayed purchases ahead of the GST changes that took effect on 22 September 2025. FADA points instead to the record first half and to growth of roughly 17% in the first five months of FY27.
Stock and outlook
Passenger-vehicle dealer inventory rose by five days to about 43–45 days, against a recommended 21. For October, 75.57% of dealers expect growth, 19.46% expect a flat market and 4.98% expect a decline, and 63% report rising bookings. Dealers see rising vehicle prices eroding the GST benefit as the main risk.
Key numbers
- September retail: 25.37 lakh (+31.82% YoY)
- First half FY27: 1.55 crore (+20.77% YoY)
- Two-wheelers: 17.90 lakh (+33.08% YoY)
- PV dealer stock: 43–45 days (vs 21 recommended)
What boards and CFOs should note
Three points stand out. First, the underlying growth rate is closer to 17% than 32%, so plan on the lower figure. Second, 43–45 days of passenger-vehicle stock is more than twice the recommended level, which can pressure dealer finances if festive conversion disappoints. Third, October is the first clean year-on-year comparison since the GST change.
