The Sensex closed at 74,729.27 on Friday 16 October 2026, up 413.66 points or 0.56%, according to HDFC Sky. The Nifty 50 closed at 23,146.15, up 148.80 points or 0.65%. Both indices rose for a second straight session.
Breadth and sectors
On the exchange, 2,221 stocks advanced, 1,791 declined and 185 were unchanged. Information technology led the market, with its index up about 4%. Metals, public sector banks and infrastructure rose about 1% to 2%, and media also gained. FMCG, oil and gas, and pharma ended lower. The Nifty Midcap index fell 0.12%, and the smallcap index was flat.
Gainers and laggards
Tech Mahindra was the top Nifty 50 gainer at about 8.5%, after what the report calls better-than-expected September-quarter revenue. TCS rose 4.89%, Infosys 4.61%, Bharti Airtel 2.75% and Mahindra & Mahindra 2.07%. The report also says Wipro rose about 6%, though it is not in the Nifty 50. The biggest laggards were InterGlobe Aviation, down 1.91%, BSE Ltd, down 1.90%, Max Healthcare, down 1.40%, Tata Consumer Products, down 1.27%, and Jio Financial Services, down 1.26%.
Global and policy cues
The report says US Treasury yields eased, which helped risk assets, and that rising US producer prices and a global sell-off in AI-linked stocks on the previous day were followed by a rebound in India on Thursday. Crude was described as elevated, near $105 a barrel. It also notes that SEBI reversed its proposed closing-auction mechanism, so expiring stock and index derivatives will settle on volume-weighted average prices from the final 30 minutes of regular trading. The report does not cover FPI or DII flows or the rupee.

What boards and CFOs should note
Three points stand out for finance teams. First, the rise was narrow by sector, with IT up about 4% while FMCG, oil and gas, and pharma fell. Second, breadth was positive but modest, at 2,221 advances to 1,791 declines, and midcaps slipped. Third, crude near $105 a barrel remained a backdrop to the session.
