JioBlackRock Mutual Fund has released its CIO note for September 2026, pointing out that recent stock market drops have created an improved risk-reward environment for equity allocations. Despite this potential, the asset manager warned that a steady market rebound remains uncertain because broader macroeconomic conditions and corporate growth remain uneven across different sectors.

During September, local share indices faced notable pressure. The Nifty 50 slipped 5.5%, and the Nifty 500 fell 5.85%. These declines occurred alongside an eight-week streak of losses for the main index, marking its lengthiest downturn since 2001. External pressures including surging oil prices, US-Iran geopolitical frictions, rising worldwide bond yields, and selling by foreign institutional entities weighed heavily on trading sentiment.

The equity market slide took place even as domestic indicators showed resilience. Collections from goods and services tax hit a 13-month high, automobile purchases were strong, and manufacturing metrics hit a seven-month peak. Technical indicators showed the market entering oversold territory on its weekly Relative Strength Index, finding support around its 200-week exponential moving average and between 22,000 and 22,400. Meanwhile, foreign institutional short positions on index futures stood near 267,000 contracts, and crude oil prices pulled back to near $95 a barrel after reaching $108.

In the fixed income space, the yield on 10-year Indian government paper increased from roughly 6.9% at August end to over 7.15%. This shift was driven by anticipation surrounding potential interest rate hikes by the Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank of India during its October gathering. Consumer price inflation reached 4.82% in August, remaining above the central bank's 4% target for three straight months.

The money market environment was further influenced by actions from the Reserve Bank of India to trim surplus banking liquidity from a peak of Rs 11.16 lakh crore. The central bank utilized foreign exchange interventions, variable rate reverse repos, and open market bond sales to absorb funds. Upcoming advance-tax payments and possible structural liquidity adjustments are expected to maintain tight liquidity conditions.

Given the ongoing volatility in debt and equity markets, JioBlackRock Mutual Fund suggested that tactical allocations and hybrid strategies remain practical choices. For debt portfolios, locking in higher prevailing yields via target maturity products or holding money market funds for short-term cash needs appears more favorable than attempting to time interest rate cycles.

Key numbers

  • Nifty 50 September drop: 5.5%
  • Nifty 500 September decline: 5.85%
  • August consumer price inflation: 4.82%
  • 10-year government security yield: above 7.15%
  • Peak surplus banking liquidity: Rs 11.16 lakh crore

What a board might note

  • Should the board evaluate corporate cash reserves and short-term liquidity strategies given that the 10-year government security yield rose above 7.15%?
  • How might the Reserve Bank of India's policy decisions affect future corporate borrowing costs, considering August inflation hit 4.82%?
  • Does the company's treasury management strategy account for upcoming advance-tax outflows and central bank liquidity operations that reduced a peak surplus of Rs 11.16 lakh crore?
