Indian shares recorded their strongest session in seven months on 5 November. The Nifty 50 rose 2.4% to 24,536.6 and the Sensex gained 2.4% to 79,310.01, extending both benchmarks’ advance to more than 8% across six sessions.

Financial and automobile shares led the move. The Nifty financial-services index added 4%, while the auto index rose 4.1%. Fourteen of the 16 major sector indices finished higher, indicating that the rally was broader than a small group of heavyweight stocks.

Foreign buying improves the flow picture

Provisional exchange data showed foreign investors bought a net ₹72.84 billion of Indian shares on Wednesday, their largest one-day purchase since October 2025. That inflow matters after record foreign selling of about $29 billion during 2026 had weighed on the rupee and domestic valuations.

Despite the rebound, the Nifty 50 remained 6.1% lower for the year and the Sensex 6.9% lower. The six-session rise therefore narrows, but does not erase, the earlier underperformance.

Oil and global policy remain swing factors

Brent crude had dropped 8.7% in the previous session before recovering to about $96 a barrel. Lower oil prices can support India’s inflation and external-balance outlook, while reduced concern about abrupt US policy shifts improved global risk appetite.

The reversal remains vulnerable to oil volatility, currency pressure and renewed foreign selling. A durable change in trend will require earnings delivery as well as supportive flows.
