The Delhi administration is drafting both temporary interventions and structural revisions to address severe vehicular gridlock that developed on the Barapullah Phase-III elevated link shortly following its public commissioning. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma convened discussions on Tuesday alongside technical advisors and Delhi Traffic Police representatives to establish rapid remedies. The operational roadway, inaugurated on September 29 after substantial project delays, was constructed with an expenditure of Rs 1,635 crore to provide an uninterrupted vehicular pathway connecting Mayur Vihar Phase-I on Noida Link Road directly with Sarai Kale Khan, extending transit toward South Delhi.

Traffic congestion has predominantly developed around the junction close to Sundial Park and Sarai Kale Khan. At this location, the three-lane elevated structure discharges into the broader transit network at a bottleneck where multiple other three-lane access routes also merge simultaneously. This convergence creates a severe imbalance between aggregate vehicular volume and downstream lane throughput, quickly generating tailbacks. Commuters attempting to reach adjoining neighborhoods have also resorted to wrong-way driving and detours due to missing connection points, further degrading traffic velocity across the elevated route.

To mitigate the localized disruptions, policymakers are weighing an exclusive U-turn opening adjacent to Gurudwara Bala Sahib. This proposed modification is intended to permit drivers coming from Siddharth Extension to enter the earlier Barapullah elevated section straight toward INA, AIIMS, and Lajpat Nagar. Additionally, municipal engineers are evaluating the installation of an extra transit lane on Ring Road between Sarai Kale Khan and ITO. In sectors where the roadway contracts from four lanes to three, authorities intend to reallocate portions of pedestrian footpaths to preserve a four-lane width, alongside reconfiguring directional road channels.

Digital mapping tools are also being monitored as a contributing factor to the continuing transit delays. The municipal administration reached out to Google after noticing navigation applications failed to convey real-time road conditions accurately across the newly introduced link. Government representatives stated that misleading digital navigation may be actively channeling extra vehicles directly into the choked interchange. According to details shared by the technology company, its routing algorithm requires roughly 15 days of observation on fresh infrastructure assets before generating dependable live mobility readings.

The operational deficiencies have also triggered a political conflict regarding administrative oversight and planning governance. Parvesh Verma attributed structural design vulnerabilities to the preceding AAP administration, maintaining that current officials took charge of an almost finished facility and are now focused on fixing structural defects. Conversely, AAP leadership challenged the execution quality of the Rs 1,635 crore project, claiming the work lacked an adequate technical study and petitioning for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into design lapses.

Moving ahead, municipal departments intend to execute several initial traffic-management adjustments across the next few days. Concurrently, an appointed consulting firm is undertaking a comprehensive survey of the entire corridor to formulate broader engineering revisions aimed at resolving the mismatch between transit capacity and traffic flow.

Key numbers

  • Project cost: Rs 1,635 crore
  • Corridor opening date: September 29
  • Google traffic pattern study duration: around 15 days

What a board might note

  • How might logistics operators and corporate fleets traveling between Noida and South Delhi factor in the initial 15-day navigation data lag on newly commissioned road infrastructure?
  • Does the review of the Rs 1,635 crore expenditure on the Barapullah Phase-III corridor indicate potential regulatory or political risks for ongoing municipal engineering contracts?
  • Should capital allocation models for urban distribution hubs near Sarai Kale Khan and ITO account for prolonged delivery delays until pedestrian footpaths are converted into additional traffic lanes?
